Interview with doctoral researcher Mária Fančovičová
Next in our series of mini-interviews with fellow doctoral researchers is an interview with Mária Fančovičová a doctoral researcher at the Department of International Law and European Law, Law Faculty of Palacký University in Olomouc.
1. Why did you decide to go for a PhD and what do you focus on your research?
I have been fascinated by international law since attending my first lecture at university. Even after five years, my enthusiasm is still the same, so I decided to continue my studies at the PhD level. My field of study is the question of autonomous weapons systems (AWS) from the perspective of public international law. My dissertation addresses the current legal framework and the future development of the AWS regulation. Furthermore, I analyze ethical and security questions of AWS and AI as a necessary part of it.
2. What problems and challenges do you face in your doctoral studies and what motivates you in your work?
The AI boom and its timeliness is my biggest motivation. Nowadays the whole world is discussing AI, its risks, opportunities, and benefits.
As a PhD student in the field of Humanities, I see funding as a huge problem. PhD students need to have a full-time job, because their scholarships do not cover even basic expenses. Related to this, the following question comes to mind: how can doctoral students find a balance between the PhD studies, work and personal life? Is it even possible to find balance?
3. Why did you decide to join ČAD?
Because I am a person who likes concrete action instead of empty talk, ČAD is a place where I hope to improve the situation of doctoral students at least a little.
